How to access Benefits Online, Business Rates Online, and Council Tax Online

Benefits Online, Business Rates Online, and Council Tax Online have merged into one portal.

You must sign into your BRUM account to access the portal.

Benefits Online

When you have signed into your BRUM account, scroll down and choose the Benefits Online option.

You will see a list of available services.

To view your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support claims online, you must verify your details.

How to verify your details

  1. Sign into your BRUM account.
  2. Scroll down and select 'make a benefits claim' from the benefits section.
  3. Choose 'existing claims'.
  4. Choose 'view my claim summary'.

You will be asked to verify your:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • national insurance number
  • postcode as shown on your council tax bill or housing benefit letter

Business Rates Online

When you have signed into your BRUM account, scroll down and choose the Business Rates Online option.

You will see a list of available services.

To register

In the business rates section:

  1. Choose ‘my account details’ in the business rates section of the portal and follow the instructions.
  2. Verify your details. You will be asked to:
    • confirm your business name
    • confirm your account number
    • answer a security question

When you have registered your account, you will be able to:

  • view up-to-date account information
  • check your balance and payments
  • update your contact details – if you change your address in your BRUM account, you will also need to change it on Business Rates Online

To make sure your request is sent to the right team, choose the 'Business Rates Online' option when you start the form.

Council Tax Online

When you sign into your BRUM account, scroll down and choose the Council Tax Online option.

You will see a list of available services.

To register

In the Council Tax section:

  1. Choose 'my account details'.
  2. Verify your details. You will be asked to:
    • confirm your name
    • confirm your account number
    • answer a security question

When you have registered your account, you will be able to:

  • view up-to-date account information – you must verify who you are and allow your BRUM account details to be shared with the Council Tax system
  • check your balance and payments
  • update your contact details – if you change your address in your BRUM account, you will also need to change it on Council Tax Online.

Students

If you are a student living with non-students, you cannot be held liable for Council Tax.

You will not have access to Council Tax Online until you stop being a full-time student and are made liable for Council Tax.

Known issues

You may get an "OAN" error message if you:

  • choose Council Tax Online
  • sign-up for ebilling
  • report a change

This may be because you are a full-time student living in a property with a non-student.
