Assistant Director - Public Health

Salary £77,046 - £95,230

Working for Birmingham City Council is more than just a job.

It is about making life better for the million people who live and work here. Our members and partners are providing the exciting and challenging influence we need to grow, to ensure that every child, citizen and place matters. With the foundations of a twenty first century Council, we’re focusing on our priorities of children, housing, health, jobs and skills. Now, we want you to come and help us become a truly modern council for our colleagues and our communities.

As our Assistant Director Public Health (Wider Determinants), you will build on these foundations to maximise the impact through work with communities, tackling health inequalities, leading partnership work on creating a healthy food city, an active city and a mentally healthy city. This role will support our international collaboration on food system work as we join the international Secretariat of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact and the Food Cities 2022 initiative. Taking your position at the heart of the Extended Leadership Team, you will deputise for the Director Public Health when required.

You will inspire those around you, igniting desire and drive to transform services, across the Council. The pace of progress must be rapid and sustainable, while the portfolio may change over time. This means that your constant adaptability and focus on delivery is critical.

At the heart of this role is leading the public health division’s work engaging with partners within the Council and across the local system to deliver sustainable change at scale, working with broad range of partners locally, nationally and internationally to deliver better outcomes for our citizens, turning evidence into practice and embedding health into all policies, working to create a healthier city where health is underpinned by systems that enable wellbeing for all communities at every age.

Ultimately, your leadership will improve the health and wellbeing of Birmingham’s residents, reducing inequalities in health outcomes. You will ensure that we work in collaboration with local partners through the Health and Wellbeing Board to deliver sustainable improvement driven by citizen voice. Leading the implementation of the emerging Health and Wellbeing Board strategy ‘Creating a Healthier City’, you will be bold in your ambition and deliver real change for citizens lives, and ensure the delivery of the ambitious programmes of citizen engagement through the Birmingham and Lewisham African and Caribbean Health Inequalities Review and the Birmingham Poverty Truth Commission.

To be successful in your application, you’ll be included in either the GMC Specialist Register, the GDC Specialist List or the UK Public Health Register. Alternatively, you are within six months of gaining entry, or you hold the equivalent training and experience.

Crucially, you bring proven experience of strategic leadership and consistent achievement in a broadly comparable environment. And, you’re knowledgeable around leading significant programmes of transformational change which have major impact on people and processes, and achieve significant savings.
