Shared lives carers

Birmingham Shared Lives is currently recruiting carers across Birmingham to offer long or short term placements for vulnerable adults.

What is shared lives?

A shared lives carer shares their home and family life with an adult who needs care or support.

Individuals in shared lives may have learning or physical disabilities, may be an older person with a frailty or dementia, or have mental health problems.

Shared Lives carers help people to develop or maintain independent skills, friendships, community involvement and give a sense of belonging.

Is being a shared lives carer right for me?

  • Formal care experience and qualification is less important than enthusiasm, motivation and commitment.
  • Shared lives carers are dedicated and passionate about the support they provide.
  • Shared lives carers and those that are cared for are matched for compatibility.
  • People living in shared lives may also take part in other activities and support during the day that helps them live a fulfilling life.

What are the benefits of being a shared lives carer?

Being a shared lives carer is a hugely rewarding role and a great opportunity to make a positive difference to the life of a vulnerable adult.

  • Shared Lives carers receive in-depth training, support and guidance with how to care for vulnerable people.
  • Shared lives carers are paid a fee for role.
  • Shared lives carers are self-employed and work under the formal agreements of the shared lives scheme.

The scheme is regulated by the care quality commission.
