The Emily Arms

The emily arms photograph

The Emily Arms was at the corner of Emily Street and Dymoke Street near Balsall Heath. This photograph was taken around 1934 by Birmingham City Council Public Works Department and documents the demolition of slum housing in the area in order to make way for the St Martins Flats.

The original Emily Arms building may have also been a casualty of the redevelopment of the area, although a public house remained at the same junction which was more recently known as The Hideout. However, this building is no longer in use as a pub and is now the Al-Rasool Community Centre.
