The Dog and Duck

The dog and duck photograph

Photographed in 1868 the Dog and Duck Inn stood on the south side of Holloway Head (at number 89) on the corner of Exeter Street but was replaced by the Talbot public house by 1900. Just behind the pub can be seen the remains of Chapman's Windmill.

The mill, which gave name to nearby Windmill Street, is dated to 1745 and was blown up in 1873. For some time before this it had fallen out of use and the land around it laid out as pleasure gardens with a bowling green giving name to another nearby pub.
