The Chapel Tavern

The chapel tavern photograph

Photographed c1945 to 1946, the Chapel Tavern, which had been in existence since 1828, can be seen on the left hand side on the junction between Great Charles Street and Ludgate Hill. The photo was taken from Church Street and St Paul's Chapel (after which it is named) can be seen at the far end of Ludgate Hill.

Photographic work was overseen by H J Manzoni, City Engineer and Surveyor of Birmingham City Council for the proposed Birmingham Inner Ring Road Scheme. Street works no. 3. Plan sheet no. 2. The Chapel Tavern site was needed to make way for the expansion of Great Charles Street into Great Charles Street Queensway and the pub closed for the last time in July 1965.
