About the school

Priestley Smith is a Specialist School for children with severe vision impairments (VI) aged 2 – 19 years. Most children follow the National Curriculum, but a small number have additional needs. All children are supported by habilitation officers and specialist ICT and Braille where needed.

Whilst a VI is a low incidence disability, it is very high impact, and children need the advocacy of a team of professionals around them, including the GB to ensure they are able to develop their own self advocacy skills and prepare for adult hood.

The Curriculum Framework for Vision Impairment is taught alongside the National Curriculum and focuses on independent living skills, access to learning and learning to access, support for mental health, literacy and leisure.

Whilst the school serves primarily Birmingham children, it is the only VI specialist school in the county and serves 7 other local authorities.

Specific requirements for this school

Challenges in the field of Special Education funding means that an understanding of Finances would be beneficial. Like any school, our students sometimes struggle with social issues, and so a knowledge of safeguarding would also be useful.

Day and times of most meetings

There are 4 Full Governing Board meetings per year, and are held on a Tuesday.

Finance, Personnel and Teaching and Learning Committees each meet four times throughout the year.

Governors are encouraged to visit the school during the school day to gain an understanding of the life of the school

The time commitment
Approximately 10 days per year spent attending meetings, visiting the school from time-to-time and undertaking relevant training.
Why volunteer?
