Best Bar None
Birmingham City Council, in partnership with West Midlands Police and Fire Service, launched this year's Best Bar None competition on 29 February 2012.
Best Bar None is a national award scheme supported by the Home Office and aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises. It was piloted in Manchester in 2003 and found to improve standards in the night time economy, with premises now competing to participate. It has since been adopted by 100 towns and cities across the UK and is now being taken up internationally.
The aim of Best Bar None is to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder in a town centre by building a positive relationship between the licensed trade, police and local authorities.
Best Bar None accreditation is awarded to venues that are outstanding in every way – superb management, brilliant service and an outstanding night out. The scheme rewards premises that are raising the standard by taking pride in their surroundings, operating responsibly and demonstrating a commitment to reducing alcohol related crime. We want residents and visitors to our city to confidently enjoy Birmingham’s outstanding nightlife.
More than 100 premises licensed to sell alcohol took part in last year's scheme and the award ceremony, sponsored by Bacardi Brown-Forman, was held at the International Convention Centre on 13 October 2011.
A team of assessors from Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Police spent months visiting each establishment that had entered to probe every aspect of how they are run and give them a score. Those with the highest scores were shortlisted and a panel of judges selected the winners of the awards.
And the winners were:
BEST INDEPENDENT BAR - Mono Bar, Arcadian.
BEST UNIVERSITY/STUDENT BAR - Joe's Bar, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston.
BEST HOTEL BAR - Holiday Inn Express, Lionel Street, City Centre.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD (voted for by listeners of radio station BRMB) - Risa, Broad Street.
