Schools are requested to complete a data collection template and supply this data for the Spring 2021 Term. Additional to the Spring Term - please note that the Free School Meals take up numbers are requested in this form.  . Any failure to supply accurate data may have a detrimental impact upon a school’s funding.

The deadline for completion is Friday 19th February 2021 and again without the data the LA will not be in a position to accurately determine a school’s funding. The Data Collection template has been emailed out to all schools on Monday 8th Feb 2021 if you have not received it please email fairfunding@birmingham.gov.uk - It is the school’s responsibility to check your Data and Census numbers and any discrepancies should be picked up before the 28th February 2021

'brap online seminar - Education: Opportunity or Status Quo?'

Equalities charity brap are organising a free online seminar exploring how the education system can tackle racism, expand horizons, and prepare young people for a diverse society. The seminar will explore how schools and colleges can be engines for social change. We'll look at what's taught, how it's taught, and the differing outcomes experienced as a result. At the heart of some of these concerns is the Eurocentric nature of the curriculum and the way different aspects of history and culture are presented. Whose story is told?

This event will be chaired by Dr Richard Hillier, Coventry University. Our main speaker is Inderjit Dehal. Inderjit has been involved in the equality arena for three decades, including a senior civil servant role at the Department of Education where he spent 12 years. He led the development of the UK Government's first national strategy to raise the attainment of Black and minority ethnic students. Inderjit also headed up the London Challenge, widely regarded as one of the most effective education development programmes delivered in the UK.

Birmingham Civic Society's Next Generation Awards for Birmingham Secondary Schools

The Next Generation Awards Scheme - Encouraging pupils to develop active citizenship skills that can make a real difference to their communities for years to come

The Birmingham Civic Society is running its Next Generation Awards scheme for Birmingham Secondary schools again this year. We are really passionate about Citizenship and enabling pupils to develop key citizenship skills that will encourage them to take active roles in helping the communities they live in for years to come.

The scheme is a Citizenship awards programme that is offered to schools for FREE for years 7, 8 and 9 and is fully resourced, with additional Home Learning resources (which can be used as a standalone activity), a Virtual Assembly and Virtual Assessments offered this year to enable as many schools as possible to take part in any way they can in these challenging times.

The format of the scheme is project-based and designed to meet many of the requirements of the Key Stage 3 Citizenship Curriculum. The scheme asks pupils to work in teams to identify issues and trends affecting people in their community. It is an inclusive project which is great for developing pupils' skills in team-working, ICT, presentation, creative writing and problem solving. Pupils conduct research and develop proposals for actions that would improve some aspect of life in the future. They present their proposals to an assessment panel and compete for Gold, Silver or Bronze awards. The programme has been running for sixteen years now and involved over 32, 800 pupils across Birmingham in that time.

All Pupils that take part in the scheme receive individual certificates for their achievement and a selection of the best projects competes for the Newman Prize of up to £1500 and mentoring support via Enactus of Aston University to get their community action projects off to a flying start.

This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uviXumlg3k4&feature=youtu.be) was created to showcase previous winners, the Elderly Explore team from Turves Green Girls’ School, their project was devised by three pupils to combat social isolation in the elderly community in their area and the tea parties in school for their elderly neighbours, with food, games and singing, have proven a great success. The impact that the project has had for the pupils involved, the school and the community has been wonderful and it is hoped that this video will encourage other schools to develop similar active citizenship projects across the city.

The scheme is FULLY RESOURCED and FREE to all Birmingham Secondary Schools so please do get in touch so that we can share the resources with you and enable your pupils to develop active citizenship skills and work towards developing community action projects that could make a real difference to our communities.

For more information and to request the resources contact Jo Dunlop on 07740 444 617 or email: nextgenerationawards@googlemail.com

The PIPA Trial – exploring the effectiveness of an online parenting resource

The PIPA Trial is exploring the effectiveness of an online resource for parents/carers to help prevent depression and anxiety in young people. The trial is coordinated by the University of Warwick.

We will be recruiting families of young people aged 11-15 years from Birmingham, Coventry and surrounding areas and are collaborating with secondary schools to promote the trial and engage with families. Involvement for schools is very easy and minimal – we will work with a key contact in your school (mental health/safeguarding lead or similar) to sign a letter agreement and send out invitations to families (we will provide all necessary documents).

The PIPA Trial is free of cost to families and schools and is conducted completely online. Parents/carers and young people who are eligible to take part will be asked to complete some questionnaires and will receive access to a range of online parenting resources.

This is a great opportunity for schools to get involved in the drive to improve youth mental health and support students and families, particularly during these unprecedented times.

If your school is interested in getting involved and would like more information, please contact the trial team:
