Update on Laptops For Children

The Department for Education (DfE) is providing laptops to help vulnerable children and young in people in Birmingham stay in touch with social care services and provide access to remote education.
Birmingham Children's Trust are now distributing laptops and maybe routers, to children with a social worker who have no access to a laptop or network.

Collection of equipment
Educational establishments who will be supporting the pupils can collect the laptops by completing the form attached here and return it to LaptopsforChildren@birmingham.gov.uk
Note: Collection of laptops will remain available over the summer break
A list of schools who have been identified as having pupils who meet the criteria can be found here.

Mobile device management from DfE
The Microsoft laptops have security settings already configured and managed by the Department for Education (DfE) using Microsoft Intune. Schools can take control of the devices at any time by restoring them to factory settings and applying your own MDM solution. This will restore the machine to its original state without any DfE software or settings, and it will no longer be enrolled into the DfE device management system.

The instructions on how to Restore to Factory settings are here. Schools will then be able to install their own central management arrangements and web filtering prior to sending pupils, schools will then be responsible for the ongoing support and management in line with their current stock.

Pupils may receive a 4g router and SIM card to support with access to the internet for education purposes. The SIM will offer internet access until Oct 2020, after this the schools may need to provide new Routers and SIM cards for continued internet access.

Further Support
If you have any questions or issues with the equipment please refer to the FAQ or contact LaptopsforChildren@birmingham.gov.uk who will be more than happy to support you.
