Birmingham Holiday Activities & Food Programme: Spring (Easter) Grants Applications

Following a hugely successful programme in 2021 where over 45,000 children and young people accessed high quality holiday clubs delivered by almost 300 different providers, we are delighted to announce that the application process for Spring 2022 is now open.

The grant portal for applications to deliver spring (Easter) holiday programmes is now open until 27th March 2022.

Following feedback from 2021, we are now inviting schools to apply for all holiday periods in one application.

There are some significant changes to the delivery requirements including the focus of funding only being used for children eligible for benefits-related free school meals. There are also changes to the delivery requirements. Alongside ensuring every child receives a healthy meal, access to physical and enriching activities, organisations must also provide daily nutritional education, a food education session for families and be able to signpost families to relevant local services.

Birmingham 2022 Youth Programme

School staff from across the region are invited to an online briefing by the Bring The Power team at Birmingham 2022. More information including how to book is available at this link.

The briefing event will take place on Thursday 17th February, 3:30-4:15pm. During this, we will give an overview of the programme and outline opportunities for schools to engage.

The Bring The Power programme aims to reach 1 million children and young people across the West Midlands. We will do this through numerous engagement opportunities including school workshops, digital classroom resources, cultural activities, school festival days and many more. The programme has been developed with the support of local young people and school leaders from the region to ensure it meets the needs of those it aims to support.

BCC Schools Contracts Data Collection for Lease Accounting (IFRS 16)

The new standard for lease accounting (IFRS 16) becomes effective from 1 April 2022. To prepare for this, BCC’s final accounts team need to collect data for all schools’ contracts including vehicle leases in order to assess them under IFRS 16. Please use the excel file in the link below and fill it in for all contracts where the total contract value is more than £5,000. Please provide sufficient detail in contract description field to enable the final accounts team to understand if the contract includes physical assets and whether the asset identified are leased by the school. The returned data will be assessed under IFRS 16 and additional information would be needed for contracts deemed to be in scope of IFRS 16.

SEND & Inclusion Event – Parent Partnerships: 17th February 2022

Pupil and School Support is hosting a series of ‘Inclusion Events’, each focused on a different aspect of inclusive practice. 

The first of these inclusion events focuses on working with parents and carers as our partners. The session will have an emphasis on thinking about how we can support parents and carers along with increasing parental participation as part of our decision-making processes. 

This is a FREE event which includes briefings from guest speakers, Information Stations manned by a range of professionals and an opportunity to network with other SENCOs and professionals.

  • Early Help Information Station – to talk to about Early Help in their school 
  • PSS Co-Production Station – Practical advice on effective partnerships with parents

Communication and Autism Team: Transition to secondary school session for parents

The Communication and Autism Team would like to invite parents to an information session to give parents the opportunity to discuss with colleagues and representatives the process of transitioning to secondary school. Places can be booked using the links below:

Services for Education Training: Working Scientifically and Assessment in Years 1 & 2 and 5 & 6

  • Working Scientifically and Assessment in Years 1 and 2 – 22nd March 2022
  • Working Scientifically and Assessment in Years 5 and 6 – 29th March 2022

Effective teaching and assessment of Working Scientifically is central to developing children’s ideas, skills, knowledge and understanding in science. This course will cover the progression across the different types of enquiry found within the ‘Working Scientifically’ framework and how these can be embedded through Key Stage Science Curriculums.

During the course, participants will have an opportunity to:

  • explore the teacher assessment of science in relation to the standards set out in the statutory national framework
  • consider what makes effective evidence to ensure consistent and reliable teacher assessment judgements

This course provides an in depth focus of the progression within the five different types of enquiry including Observing over time, Identifying and Classifying, Pattern Seeking, Research and Comparative and Fair Testing and how these can be embedded into the Science Key Stage Knowledge and Understanding Contents. Delegates will leave with a portfolio of assessment tasks and how to moderate Working Scientifically effectively.

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust: Makaton Workshops

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is running a number of workshops throughout the year. 

Level 1 and 2 
This workshop is suitable for professionals who need to use Makaton in their work (as well as for others who wish a more in-depth training) and parents and non-professional carers e.g. child-minders; who need to use Makaton in everyday situations The sessions cover current best practice around sign and symbol use and an overview of alternative systems of communication.  At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to use signs from stages 1-4 plus the Additional stage of the Makaton vocabulary.  Participant manuals containing all the signs and symbols will be provided.

Level 3
This workshop builds on the signs and symbols learnt in Levels 1 and 2.  It aims to increase participants’ knowledge and skills.  It develops ideas and confidence in using signs and symbols and teaches accurate interpretative skills. Sign analysis is considered and Stages 5 and 6 signs and symbols are taught.  Participant manuals are provided.

Reflections Training Open Day

Reflections Training is holding an open day on Friday 25th February 2022 - 10:00am to 12:00pm at Reflections Hairdressing. 

This is a excellent opportunity during the half term break for any current Year 11 students who are considering a career in hairdressing or barbering. Reflections specialises in hairdressing and barbering but students can come along to chat about what they want to do and find out about what is on offer such as apprenticeships, traineeships and study programmes.  

Students can explore the facilities, meet the tutors and find information to give them an idea of courses and jobs they can apply for.
