After sunset on Friday 10 July, the exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up green and white to mark Remembering Srebrenica 2026.

Fifty years after the world said "never again" to the horrors of the Holocaust, genocide took place on European soil.

The name Srebrenica has become synonymous with those dark days in July 1995 when, in the first-ever United Nations declared safe area, thousands of men and boys were systematically murdered and buried in mass graves.

The victims, who were Muslim, were selected for death because of their identity.

This was the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II.

This year's theme

Every year, Remembering Srebrenica chooses a theme to help people think about the past and learn from it. This year’s theme, "We Are Here," honours the dignity, courage, and strength of survivors while serving as a call to action against hatred and intolerance.

Hundreds of community actions, civic ceremonies, and educational events will take place across the country to remember the 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys murdered in 1995. In the West Midlands and throughout the UK, local authorities and community groups will host vigils, share survivor testimonies, and illuminate buildings to ensure the atrocities are never forgotten.
