Nominate a Provider Portal User

As you may already be aware, the Early Years and Childcare Team has launched a new Information Portal for providers called the Nexus Provider Portal.

Many providers have already nominated a Nexus Provider Portal user. If you haven’t already done so, please do this today using our online form. You can have accounts for up to four people within your organisation.

The introduction of this portal will enable us to:

  • strengthen the information that we collect from you
  • improve the information that we can provide to parents and third parties when they are looking for childcare options
  • contact you more efficiently.

Please note: Completing this form does not immediately create your account. After we verify the nominated user form, we will send you a link to create your Provider Portal account.

Who needs a Nexus Provider Portal account?

The Nexus Provider Portal is required for Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) providers that have registered provision for children of all ages. It is also required for Maintained Nursery Schools (MNS) where there is registered PVI provision for children under two years old.

School-based nurseries and schools do NOT require a Nexus Provider Portal account. These settings should continue to use Pendulum for all funding and provider-related processes

If you have any queries about the Nexus Provider Portal, please contact FamilyInformation@birmingham.gov.uk.

Get Involved in Delivering Best Start Brum: Birmingham's Best Start in Life Strategy

Birmingham's Best Start in Life Strategy is now moving into delivery through six dedicated workstreams, bringing together partners from across early years, education, health, family support, voluntary and community sectors to improve outcomes for babies, children, and families.

The six workstreams are:

  • Workstream 1 - Child and Family Voice
  • Workstream 2 - Parenting Support
  • Workstream 3 - Workforce Development
  • Workstream 4 - Transitions
  • Workstream 5 - Early Education Entitlement (EEE) Take-Up
  • Workstream 6 - Early Years Inclusion and SEND Reform Readiness

We recognise that achieving our shared ambitions requires collaboration, expertise, and commitment from practitioners and leaders across the system. As the workstreams begin to develop and implement their action plans, there are opportunities for colleagues to become involved and contribute to shaping this important programme of work.

Whether you have specialist knowledge, practical experience, innovative ideas, or an interest in supporting improvements for children and families, we welcome expressions of interest in joining one of the workstreams.

By participating, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Influence the delivery of key priorities within the Best Start in Life Strategy.
  • Share good practice and learning across the partnership.
  • Contribute to system-wide improvements for Birmingham's children and families.
  • Collaborate with partners from a range of organisations and sectors.

If you would like to find out more or express an interest in joining a workstream, please contact the Best Start in Life Programme Team at FamilyInformation@birmingham.gov.uk

Together, we can ensure that every child in Birmingham has the best possible start in life.

New Workshop for Early Years Providers

Do you sometimes wonder whether your risk assessments are too detailed, not detailed enough, or simply taking up valuable time that could be spent supporting children?

Join us for Keeping Children Safe: Practical Risk Assessment in the Early Years - a highly practical and engaging workshop designed to help childminders, nursery leaders and practitioners develop confidence in assessing and managing risk whilst enabling children to explore, learn and thrive.

This session will move beyond paperwork and theory, focusing on how risk assessment can become a meaningful tool that supports children's safety, wellbeing and development every day.

What will you gain?

  • A clear understanding of your statutory responsibilities under the EYFS Statutory Framework and health and safety legislation
  • Greater confidence in identifying hazards and assessing risks within your own setting

Back by Popular Demand: Building Babies' Brains Specialist Baby Room Programme Returns to Birmingham (Apply Today)

Following the success of the first Birmingham cohort earlier this year, Building Babies' Brains Specialist Baby Room Training is returning for a second time to support Early Years practitioners and childminders working with children aged 0-2.  The programme proved extremely popular with practitioners across the city, with places filling quickly and participants reporting significant improvements in confidence, knowledge and practice.

Birmingham Early Years practitioners, room leaders and childminders are invited to register their interest in attending this fully funded specialist Baby Room training programme, designed to strengthen practice for babies by enhancing the work of existing baby room practitioners across the city.

The previous Birmingham cohort demonstrated exceptionally strong engagement, with all participating practitioners reporting increased confidence in supporting babies' brain development.

This three-session programme, funded by the Department for Education, will be delivered through the HEART Midlands Early Years Stronger Practice Hub by Clare Stead.

What Previous Participants Said:

"The best baby training."

"My brain is full of so much knowledge. I am so proud of what I do now."

"Since doing your training it's really opened my eyes and made me think: we don't just look after babies, we build their brains and help them grow."

"I really enjoyed the training and found the practical examples and discussions helpful. It has made me reflect on my practice and given me ideas that I can use every day."

"One of the best in-person trainings I have ever attended… I left feeling motivated, confident and proud of the work we do."

About the Trainer

Clare Stead is an Early Years specialist, trainer and researcher with over 20 years' experience in education.  She is internationally recognised for her work on baby brain development and the first 1,000 days.  Clare is passionate about helping practitioners move beyond care routines to create environments where babies can truly thrive.

School Based Nursery Phase 3 Capital Funding Programme

A fantastic opportunity for schools to increase the capacity of their existing nursery provision or create a new nursery provision subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

The Department for Education has recently rolled out Phase 3 of the School Based Nursery Capital Programme.

The purpose of the programme is for schools to either increase the number of early education places for (0- to 4-year-olds) in their existing early years provision or create places at a new provision based on the school site to meet an unmet gap in the local area where the school is located.

The funding will only support capital costs associated with the refurbishment or repurposing of existing space on the school site.

The funding opportunity is aimed at all state funded schools e.g. Maintained Nursery Schools, Primary Schools and all through schools with Primary provision.

If you are a school interested in this funding opportunity, please email Kevin.Caulfield@birmingham.gov.uk and Rebekah.Horton@birmingham.gov.uk directly so we can set up a meeting to discuss your proposal and share information regarding the application process and eligibility.

Introduction to WellComm training

For the attention of EEE providers.

WellComm is the approved screening tool in Birmingham, and it supports a consistent universal approach to assessing and supporting children’s speech, language and communication needs. If you are not yet using WellComm to screen your children’s speech and language, please attend one of our online training sessions. Birmingham City Council will fully fund one WellComm Toolkit for all schools, nurseries, pre-schools, and childminders registered to offer Early Education Entitlement (EEE) places. Early Years settings need to attend an ‘Introduction to WellComm’ workshop. During the workshop, you will be provided with instructions on how to receive your Toolkit. Settings that have received a WellComm screening tool can continue to send staff that are new or require a refresher of how to use WellComm onto the training.
