Included in this update:

The summer holidays are drawing to a close, and next week will see many people returning to work and children back to school. With a number of major transport schemes continuing, and the closure of Paradise Circus from 3 September, the roads around Birmingham – and particularly in the city centre – are likely to be exceptionally busy.

For more information about travel in Birmingham visit: www.birmingham.gov.uk/summertravel. You can also visit our web pages to find out more about current and future road works. Previous Birmingham Connected updates can also be viewed.

To make your journey as smooth as possible please plan ahead and try to:

  • Plan ahead
  • Allow more time for journeys
  • Travel off-peak, where possible
  • Use public transport, walk or cycle to your destination
  • leave the car at home and travel by bus, train, tram, bike, or on foot
  • consider car-sharing with family, friends, or colleagues
  • beat the traffic by travelling at quieter times
  • avoid travel by working from home

Paradise Circus closure from 3 September

From Monday 3 September Paradise Circus will be closed to traffic in both directions until summer 2019. This is to enable construction of the Metro extension from Victoria Square to Centenary Square. The A38 Queensway underpass, which runs beneath Paradise Circus, will remain open in both directions to allow access to and from the Aston Expressway and M6. Broad Street and the surrounding area remain open for business and visitors as usual. Some bus services will be diverted.

For more information about road closures, diversions and to plan your journey, visit www.birmingham.gov.uk/metro-works where you will find a handy interactive map produced by Transport for West Midlands. Please plan ahead and avoid driving into the city centre whenever possible.

In order to construct a bus gate linking George Road south of Islington Row Middleway to Bath Row north of Islington Row Middleway, George Road will be temporarily closed at its junction with Islington Row Middleway from Monday 3 to Friday 21 September. One lane of Islington Row Middleway westbound in the vicinity of George Road will also be closed. This is part of the complimentary highway improvement measures associated with the Metro construction works at Paradise Circus and Broad Street.

Sprint consultation

Have your say on exciting new plans for a modern, high-quality public transport service. Sprint is a limited stop service with dedicated bus lanes and priority through areas of congestion. Transport for West Midlands is consulting on three Sprint routes that will be operational in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2022. The proposed routes are: Birmingham to Walsall (A34), Birmingham to Birmingham Airport and Solihull (A45) and Sutton Coldfield to Birmingham via Langley.

To find out more and have your say visit: www.tfwm.org.uk/sprint. The consultation closes Friday 28 September.

Sprint consultation drop-in sessions are also available:

  • 9am to 3pm – Saturday 1 September – The Parade, Sutton Coldfield
  • 1pm to 7pm – Thursday 6 September – Scott Arms, Sandwell
  • 9am to 3pm – Saturday 15 September – Mell Square, Solihull
  • 2pm to 7pm – Wednesday 19 September – Park Street, Walsall
  • 9am to 3pm – Saturday 22 September – High Street, Birmingham city centre

Middleway improvements

We are pleased to report that maintenance works at Dartmouth Circus, one of the busiest junctions on the city’s road network, have now all been completed – over a week ahead of schedule!

Construction work is ongoing at Ashted Circus, and we appreciate this is causing some traffic delays in the area at present. Lane closures are in place from 9:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday and overnight from 8pm to 6am Sunday to Friday.

HS2 Curzon Street Station works

From 27 August, Park Street (B4114) is reduced to one lane overnight (from 8pm to 7am). The footpath is also closed during these times. These works are expected to last for approximately 2 weeks.

Euston Station closure

There will be no trains in or out of Euston Station this weekend (1 to 2 September) – the last of three weekend closures. Find out more about Euston Station summer weekend closures.
