Paradise Circus closure

From Monday 3 September Paradise Circus will be closed to traffic in both directions until summer 2019.

This is to enable construction of the Metro extension from Victoria Square to Centenary Square. The A38 Queensway underpass, which runs beneath Paradise Circus, will remain open in both directions to allow access to and from the Aston Expressway and M6. Traffic marshals will be in place to assist drivers wishing to access Holliday Street from Suffolk Street Queensway.

A number of bus services will be diverted and stops on Broad Street, as well as some on Suffolk Street Queensway, will not be served. More information and interactive map.

Other Westside works

Several other schemes are currently underway in the west side of the city centre. These works have been carefully coordinated to take place before the closure of Paradise Circus and during the summer period when traffic is usually lighter and we are making every effort to minimise disruption. However, this is resulting in a high level of activity and some congestion and delays are inevitable.

Works include:

  • Construction of a new right turn lane from Islington Row Middleway to Bath Row. Islington Row Middleway (ring road A4540) eastbound is currently reduced to one lane (with 2 lanes closed) until the end of August.
  • Beginning Tuesday 21 August, construction of a bus lane on Bath Row/Holloway Head towards Holloway Circus, starting at Granville Street and ending at Blucher Street. The final bus lane will mostly be in space currently used for parking, so there will be no long term change to arrangements for general traffic.
The parking here will be permanently unavailable from 21 August. During construction, the road will operate as normal during the day; overnight there will be some lane closures and temporary suspension of parking on the opposite side of the road. The bus lane is due to be complete and in operation from Monday 3 September.
  • Gas mains replacement works in the Ladywood area. Monument Road is currently closed on the northbound section between Hagley Road and Plough and Harrow Road. This closure is expected to be in place until Sunday 2 September.
  • The section of Bath Row between Islington Row Middleway and Bishopgate Street is currently operating as a one way street towards the city centre, with diversions in place. This is due to the construction of a new development at the junction of Islington Row Middleway and Bath Row.

Businesses and venues in the west of the city, including Broad Street, remain open as usual. To help ease congestion please plan your journey in advance and leave the car at home whenever possible.

Euston Station closures

From this weekend Euston Station will be closed for three consecutive weekends; 18 to 19 August, 25 to 27 August (bank holiday) and 1 to 2 September. Find out more about Euston Station summer weekend closures.

In addition, Network Rail's Railway Upgrade Plan is improving services across the Midlands region. While works take place there may be some changes to your journey. To check your journey visit National Rail.

Dartmouth Circus

Work is ongoing at Dartmouth Circus, with a single lane operating on the roundabout every night (8.30pm to 6am) and full time between 8pm on Friday and 6am on Monday. During week days, two lanes are open. The underpass is open during the day and closed every night (8.30pm to 6am).

Ashted Circus

Work is ongoing at Ashted Circus, which now operates as a signalised junction. Night time lane closures on all approaches and exits are in place from 8pm to 6am Monday to Thursday. Daytime lane closures on Nechells Parkway and Jennens Road are in place from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

The works around Dartmouth Circus and Ashted Circus are causing some delays in the area. Please leave the car at home and travel by public transport, walk or cycle whenever possible. If you need to drive, plan ahead and leave extra time for your journey.

Drop in sessions - A38 cycle route

Public drop in sessions are available every Wednesday morning 10am to 11am at the contractor’s compound on Spring Road (next to McDonalds). Representatives from the contractor and Birmingham City Council will be on hand to discuss any queries or issues with the works.
