Summer Travel Update – 13 July 2018

The latest on transport and travel during the busy summer period.

Included in this update:

Summer travel

Birmingham is a busy place this summer, please plan ahead and think about how you travel. Our advice is to:

  • Leave the car at home and travel by bus, train, tram, bike, or on foot
  • Car-share with family, friends, or colleagues
  • Beat the traffic by travelling at quieter times
  • Avoid travelling by working from home

Dartmouth Circus work package

Major works around Dartmouth Circus have now started and will continue until the end of August. Work is being carried out 24 hours a day, with phased lane closures in place and overnight full closure of the A38(M) Dartmouth Circus underpass from 8:30pm to 6am.

In addition, there will be two full closures of the outbound A38(M) Aston Expressway and associated slip roads next week: 8pm Wednesday 18 July to 6am Thursday 19 July and 8pm Thursday 19 July to 6am Friday 19 July.

As a result of the various works, daytime traffic in the area is heavier than usual, particularly around Ashted Circus, so please try to switch to public transport, cycling or walking or choose an alternative route.

Find out more about the Dartmouth Circus works package.

Metro extension & Paradise closure

The next phase of Birmingham Westside Metro extension will commence in September. This stage of the works will see the Metro line constructed from Victoria Square to Centenary Square, in central Birmingham. To facilitate this stage of construction, Paradise Circus will close in both directions from Monday 3 September 2018 until summer 2019. The A38 Queensway underpass will remain open in both directions.

Clean Air Zone consultation

Air pollution is linked to nearly 900 deaths in Birmingham every year. We are proposing a Clean Air Zone which means the most polluting vehicles must pay to enter the city centre. You can share your views by completing the online survey by 17 August 2018.

Following feedback to date we have added and updated some of the documents available to download:

  • Frequently asked questions was last updated on 10 July.
  • A printable poster is available to help you spread the word about the consultation.
  • In the consultation for organisations, a copy of the questions is available to download to help you prepare your response (please don’t use the pdf to respond though, use the online questionnaire!).

Two public drop-in sessions are being held next week: at Ladywood Community Centre, on Tuesday 17 July from 4pm to 8pm, and at Stirchley Baths, on Thursday 19 July from 3pm to 7pm. Come along and have your say.

If you are interested in attending a consultation event for organisations, please email cleanair@birmingham.gov.uk.

Snow Hill/Colmore Row improvements consultation

In partnership with Colmore Business District we are consulting on a programme of improvements for the Snow Hill, Colmore Row and Livery Street area of the city. This includes improving the appearance of Snow Hill Station, measures to reduce congestion and improvements to pedestrian access in the area. You can share your views online until 30 July 2018.

South Birmingham bus changes

From Sunday 22 July National Express West Midlands is making some changes to bus services in and around south and south-west Birmingham. New express buses will mean more direct routes to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University of Birmingham.

Loving our canals

The widening of the towpath under the Edgbaston Tunnel has been extremely well received by cyclists and pedestrians. This is the perfect time of year to really make the most of our wonderful network of canals either for leisure or as a scenic way to travel to work. Please always remember to share these beautiful spaces with care and consideration for other users. Find out more on the Canal and River Trust web pages or visit our webpages on canal route maps around Birmingham .

Save the date and start planning!
