Transport and travel news, including information about cleaner air, St Patrick's Day Parade, road works, new cycle routes and events

Brum Breathes

We want to transform roads outside schools by creating car-free streets at the start and the end of the school day. Birmingham schools interested in taking part in our pilot Car Free School Streets scheme can find out about submitting an expression of interest.

Last week's Brum Breathes School Summit gave children, parents, health professionals, councillors and environmental experts the opportunity to talk about the issue of air pollution and how we can work together to tackle it. Find out more about air pollution in Birmingham and what you can do to help reduce it.

Businesses can find advice about supporting Birmingham’s journey to cleaner air on the Business Breathes website.

We are encouraging everyone to have their say on the recently launched Clean Air Strategy consultation.

St Patrick's Day Parade

Sunday 17 March sees the return of Birmingham’s famous St Patrick’s Day Parade on Digbeth High Street. Up to 80,000 people are expected to attend the event so please plan ahead and allow extra time for travel. Digbeth is easy to get to by bus, train or coach so leave the car at home for a smoother journey. Road restrictions for the parade will mean temporary changes to some bus services in the area.

Roadworks

Work continues on roads in central Birmingham in preparation for the construction of HS2. From 20 March work will be carried out in phases on Moor Street Queensway, Albert Street and Masshouse Lane. Temporary lane closures and changes to bus services will be required. For more information about these works visit the HS2 in Birmingham web pages.

Highways England will be carrying out maintenance works on A38(M) Aston Expressway overnight from 10pm until 6am on the nights of 11-15 March. The route into and out of the city will remain open but lane closures will be in place. Please plan ahead and expect delays.

An opening ceremony has marked the completion of works to improve the Ashted Circus Junction on Birmingham's ring road. This month traffic signals at the junction will be switched to an intelligent system which continually monitors traffic flow and alters signal timings in order to ensure the junction operates at maximum efficiency. Find more information about roadworks on our web pages.

Think BLUE, let cyclists through!

With the new cycle routes opening soon on A34 and A38 we are making drivers aware of some new road layouts. The new blue surfaced routes are separated from other traffic wherever possible. Where the blue cycle routes cross central reservations or side roads drivers need to give way to cyclists. If you are a driver, please take note of the new road layouts and consider leaving the car at home to give cycling a go!

From Monday 25 March planned access changes to Priory Road from Bristol Road (A38) will be implemented. Travelling out of the city there will be no right turn into Priory Road and travelling into the city there will be no access (left turn and right turn) into Priory Road from Bristol Road. The left turn towards the cricket ground will remain open. Signage will be installed from next week and more information will also be provided about alternative routes.

Primark store opening

The UK’s largest Primark store will open in Birmingham city centre on Thursday 11 April. The city centre is expected to be very busy on this day and on the first weekend of the Easter holidays (13-14 April).

Advice for anyone travelling into the city:

• Plan ahead and try travelling at quieter times

• Use public transport, walk or cycle whenever possible. Plan your journey by public transport.

• If you need to drive consider parking further away - the car parks closest to the city centre will be the busiest. You can view all Birmingham City Council city centre car parks here.
