LAUNCH OF 2009 SWIMATHON

Olympic swimming gold medallist Duncan Goodhew launched the 2009 Swimathon at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre on Tuesday 10th February. The event raises money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and several Marie Curie Nurses were on hand to encourage people to sihgn up for the event. Over the last 2 years Swimathon has raised over £3 million. The Swimathon takes place from 17th to 18th April. Last year customers and staff at Fox Hollies raised £9,710 and this year the target is to raise at least £10,000. As well as the official launch Duncan went on to give a swimming masterclass to children from the Strokes swimming class programme and gave them signed goggles.

BUILDING DEVELOPMENTS
There are a number of new building developments in the Constituency area:
  • Tesco at the Swan
    Work is due to begin in February 2009 following completion of the work on Bakeman House. The store is due to open in November 2010.
  • Meadway Re-development.
    The proposals to improve the neighbourhood at Meadway.
  • Richmond Primary Care Centre
    Work has now started on a new Health Centre which is due to open in April 2009.
  • Radleys Improvement Scheme
    Refurbishment of the Radleys shopping centre has now started. The project includes provision of a service road with parking bays, block paving on the shop forecourts, modular paving to the public footpath and stainless steel street furniture.

    Volunteer Awards 2009
    The 4th annual event was held on 25th February when 55 volunteers from Yardley were honoured.

    Stanville School Success
    Children, staff and parents at Stanville School are really excited as they have just found out that they are in the regional finals to receive one of the prestigious National Teaching Awards for their work on sustainability!
    Town Centre Managers
    The Constituency has recently appointed 2 Town Centre Managers to oversee major shopping areas in Yardley.

    News from Jenny Drew who looks after the Yew Tree and the Swan areas and can be contacted on 464 1969.
    New Yew Tree Traders Association
    Jenny has been working with local businesses and police to establish a traders association for the Yew Tree shopping area. Annette Graham, chairperson of the new association and manager of Boots at Yew Tree Retail Park said "I am delighted that businesses in Yardley feel passionate enough about our centre's future to support this initiative." Initial priorities for the group are crime reduction and preparing for the redevelopment of the Swan Shopping Centre.

    Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF) Community Chest 2008/9

    Each Ward will receive a £100k allocation for 2008/9. Schemes supported through Community Chest should support ward or neighbourhood working or contribute to extending community engagement, cohesion and empowerment. Priorities for the Yardley Constituency can be found in the 2007-8 Priorities Statement which has been adopted for use for 2008-9 by Yardley Constituency Committee.
