Damage caused by tornadoOur response

We:
  • Activated the Emergency Plan response team within 30 minutes and evacuated the area.
  • Transported and housed 150 residents who were displaced
  • Ensured safety and security of the disaster area. 24 hour security personnel are on site to support the police. The cordons remain in place for safety reasons and to facilitate the clear up operation (as of 2 August).
  • Assessed the damage to 1000 properties and made safe and secured individual properties
  • Set up a tornado hotline (0800 073 0440) and three tornado information bureaux to give advice to residents
  • distributed regular updates to those affected
  • Cleaned-up and handed back properties to owner/occupiers as soon as it was safe to do so
We recognise that residents will want to return to their homes at the earliest opportunity. Our priority is ensuring safety for all as soon as possible.

We are collating detailed information on the number of uninsured properties. We will look sympathetically at how we can support owner/occupiers and alleviate financial pressures by providing loans that can be recovered at a later date.

The Housing Department is working with Registered Social Landlords and owner-occupiers, particularly those with the most severely damaged properties to provide longer-term suitable accommodation until the area is restored and made safe.
