Overview

50+ Body Conditioning

This general conditioning class will improve posture, co-ordination, stamina and mobility providing you with a varied and enjoyable workout.

Abs & Back

A brilliant workout concentrating solely on the stomach area. Helps to improve strength, tone, posture and core stability.

Abs Blast

Specific exercises to help strengthen the abdominal muscles and improve general core stability.

Aerobics

A range of high or low impact moves designed to improve cardiovascular fitness.

Antenatal Aerobics classes are offered at some leisure centres.

Aquatone

The benefits of exercising in the water are many. Aquatic exercise can not only enhance your cardiovascular fitness, it can also improve your muscular endurance and overall strength.

Because water provides buoyancy and support for the body, the likelihood of muscle, bone, and joint injuries is nearly eliminated when exercise is performed in the water.

Since water aerobics are often performed in chest-deep water, this type of exercise appeals to swimmers and non-swimmers alike.

Body Attack

Recommended for people with moderate to high fitness levels, this 55-minute cardiovascular interval training class, combining high intensity aerobics with strength and stabilisation exercises. You'll increase heart and lung capacity and develop a more efficient cardiovascular system, together with general improvement in endurance and body strength.

Body Balance

Body Balance is a dynamic yoga-based stretch programme that leaves you feeling relaxed and renewed. It combines the fundamental principles and practices of yoga, pilates and feldenkrais, such as controlled breathing, concentration, flexibility and strength training to create a holistic workout that brings the body, mind and soul into a state of balance and harmony.

Please wear comfortable clothing. Shoes and socks must be removed prior to the class commencing.

Body Blitz

A class that will tone and condition the whole body.

Body Combat

Body Combat combines powerhouse moves and stances developed from a range of self-defence disciplines including Karate, kickboxing, Tai Chi and Tae Kwon do, into a 'take no prisoners', adrenaline-pumping routine. It is an empowering, athletic workout that will have you 'fighting fit' in record time! There is no sparring or one to one contact. Suitable for all fitness levels.

Belly Dancing

Belly Dancing is a great low impact class for all ages, shapes and sizes, where you will learn basic moves of various styles and simple choreographies to traditional and modern music.

Body Jam

With the emphasis as much on having fun as breaking a sweat, BODYJAM is an addictive fusion of dance and aerobic moves. The blend includes the latest sounds of hip hop, funk and Latin music, together with the coolest sounds currently topping the charts.

Body Pump

A non-impact class designed to give your body a complete workout using barbells and weights to motivating music. The class enables all levels of fitness to take part.

Body Pump Express

A body pump class in a 3/4 hr class (one or two sections are taken out)

Body Step

Body Stepoffers an effective, high or low impact workout to increase stamina, specifically to improve coordination and tone the lower body. The step is used to complete core conditioning and toning exercises.

Bums, Tums & Thighs

Toning exercises for those problem bits! Often includes a low impact aerobic session to burn calories and build up stamina. A great class for beginners.

Circuit Training

Challenge your body in this unique class combining strength, endurance and cardio-vascular exercises. Great for improving sports performance. A class can include skipping, squats and press ups.

Dance Mats and Target Walls

Dance Mats and Target Walls are the latest craze to keep kids fit. They help children with timing, agility, coordination and offer a great cardio-vascular workout too.

The interactive use of exercise to music with Dance Mats is a popular alternative to traditional forms of exercise. Likewise, use of the Sportwall helps children develop skills in a variety of other sports and aids concentration and teamwork. Children can use the equipment at Cocks Moors Woods LC, Handsworth LC, Small Heath LC, and Moseley School Health & Fitness Centre.

Fat Burners

A brilliant low impact aerobics class to burn loads of body fat followed by a strengthening and toning session for the whole body.

Friday Fast Blast - A class consisting of Aerobics and Conditioning exercises for the whole of the body.

Group Fitness Classes

The aerobics programme should have something for everyone - whatever your age or fitness level. All classes are taught by fully-qualified instructors, who will ensure you work out at the right pace for you.

Hi Lo Aerobics

This is an aerobic class to motivational music giving you a cardio and toning workout. This class is suitable for all levels.

Hula & Core

Using a hula hoop and stability ball working all the muscle groups, especially the stomach and waist.

ICE Youth Gym

The ICE Youth Gym offers all the benefits of full-size gym equipment, but is perfect for children aged 8 – 16 years old as the kit is especially designed with youngsters in mind. Each piece of resistance equipment helps to tone the muscles and as your heart beats and pumps oxygen around your body, you get a cardiovascular workout.

There are ICE Gyms at the following venues: Great Barr Leisure Centre; Kingsbury Leisure Centre, Erdington; Aston Villa FC; Hamstead Hall Community Learning Centre and at Northfield Pool & Fitness Centre.

Line Dancing

Line Dancing follows the traditional format of the American line dancing theme. You do not need a partner to attend these classes.

Pilates

Using slow controlled movements, using ‘core’ muscles to strengthen abdominals and spine. Pilates brings mind and body together focusing on concentration, balance, precision & breathing.

Powerplate

Power Plate training sessions cater to all fitness levels, from beginner to advanced, and are taught by qualified Power Plate Trainers. These classes incorporate muscle strengthening, stretching and toning, along with massage and relaxation. Timeslots are available before or after work and even during your lunch break. One to one personal sessions are available for those who wish to receive tailored workouts; these can be booked in person at reception in the Fitness Suite.

Fun and fat burning on individual trampets. Full aerobic, Cardiovascular, and Strength Workout. Improves Balance, Coordination and Muscle Tone.

Salsa Dancing

Salsa is a dance class which incorporates a low level of aerobic workout to Latin American music. You do not need to bring a partner to attend this class.

Seniors Keep Fit

Your chance to be put through your paces with some gentle keep fit exercises under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor.

Strikes

The Strikes Junior Soccer Academy is a football coaching initiative for boys and girls aged between 4 and 13 years. Strikes pupils follow a carefully-structured progression system designed for children of all ages and abilities. The Strikes ethos centres on participation, teamwork, fair play and fun.

Strokes Swimming Lessons

Strokes offers affordable, effective swimming lessons from professional instructors in a safe and friendly environment. Children develop at their own pace and tuition helps each child reach their potential. But it’s not just for kids. Adults can learn to swim or improve their technique with Strokes. 12-week programmes run throughout the year for all ages and abilities.

You can join the scheme and there are opportunities to become a volunteer walk leader to help others to feel the benefits of walking.

Studio Cycling

The latest indoor cycling training system, for people of all fitness levels. Participants burn an average of 500 calories in 40 minutes of non-impact, individually paced, cardiovascular exercise. Inspirational music and a fun, motivating environment ensure an enjoyable, safe and effective journey for all participants.

Swimming

A great all-round exercise and suitable for all ages and levels of ability, swimming is available at all council-run pools across the city. Many centres offer dedicated sessions - just for women, men only, and those over 50. In addition to public swim times, some pools offer lane swimming and aqua aerobics, aquatone and antenatal classes. Timetables vary, so contact your local centre for details.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a low impact gentle form of exercise suitable for all. Its slow graceful movements encourage relaxation, deep breathing, balance, coordination and meditative state of mind. The result being a calmer, healthier, stronger and more confident individual.

Walking

Walking is an ideal way to get some fresh air, watch the seasons changing and enjoy the natural surroundings. Being physically active on a regular basis can significantly improve your health and fitness levels.

There is a series of around 40 2km walks covering Birmingham’s green spaces, many of which are route-marked, so they can be followed easily. A further seven 5km walks in some of the loveliest of parks. www.birmingham.gov.uk/walks

In partnership with the Health Exchange, there are also group-led walks in many communities throughout the city as part of the Be active scheme. New groups can join the scheme and there are opportunities to become a volunteer walk leader to help others to feel the benefits of walking.

Yoga - Hatha

Hatha yoga is a form of physical exercise that challenges and refines your flexibility, strength and balance. Benefits include stress management and help in recovering from injuries.
