Overview

The assisted collection service can only be offered to customers that have individual sack and recycling box collections from their properties. We are currently not able to provide assisted collections to customers that have their waste collected in large wheeled containers.

General domestic refuse

We collect refuse from domestic properties on the same day once a week. Collections happen every day, Monday to Friday, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day in which case collections will take place the following week. Every six months we give each house a roll of 26 refuse sacks, free of charge. Tower blocks and other multi-occupied homes might be provided with large containers instead of refuse sacks. We empty these at least once a week, more frequently if necessary.

Recycling

Most households in Birmingham now have a doorstep collection service.

We collect:

  • Paper and card from your blue box, every fortnight
Glass, bottles and jars, food and drinks cans and plastic bottles from your green box, every fortnight
Green sacks containing garden waste on alternate weeks to the above.

If you don’t currently have a doorstep collection of garden waste, we can collect up to two black bags of burnable garden waste (not soil or rubble) with your general domestic refuse.

Essential Information
  • For general domestic refuse we provide either:

    • Black sacks – each house gets a roll of 26 sacks every six months or
    • Large containers for multi-occupied homes, such as flats

    For recycling:

    • Green sacks for your garden waste
    • Recycling boxes – blue or green plastic boxes
    • Recycling bags – if you would these to boxes

  • An assisted service is available for people who are elderly and infirm or those with a physical disability. We cannot enter your property but can arrange to pick items up from immediately outside the property e.g. front door or side door if accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions
    • Some flats already have recycling collections. However, because all flats are different, it can be complicated to arrange this. We are currently introducing recycling collections to flats across the whole city and hope to have as many suitable blocks on board this year.

If you have a management or residents’ committee and the majority of residents would like the service, we can consider arranging it for you.

Just email us at recycling@birmingham.gov.uk and we'll arrange a visit to consider if we can introduce recycling collections.

    • We deliver a roll of 26 sacks every 6 months and work on the basis of one sack per household per week if you are using the doorstep recycling services. If you require additional black sacks you will need to buy them yourself.

    • The crews can take small items left out with your bin bags. If it is a cardboard box it can be put out for collection by the paper collection crews. For the collection of larger items please go to our bulky waste collection page or see our recycling pages for information on organisations who will take it away and reuse it.

    • This is because we now have a system of delivering rolls of sacks, which is more cost effective. It also helps cut down on the amount of refuse put out and encourages more recycling.

    • The crews are instructed to clear up any mess that may occur when they collect the rubbish. To avoid this happening please do not overfill the bags, tie them up and do not put out in advance of collections this will avoid vermin getting in and ripping the bags open.

    • Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, it is not possible to supply free dustbins.

    • The crews start at 6am so their finishing times will vary according to the amount of work they need to do to finish the round.
