Northfield Relief Road phase two - town centre improvements

Improving the environment in Northfield

We are proposing to improve the Bristol Road area in Northfield from its junction with the Relief Road to Frankley Beeches Road; the proposals are shown here and on the plan at the bottom of this page.

The principles of the improvements were agreed following extensive consultation in 2003; these plans now show the detail of how Northfield could look. We want to develop a scheme that meets the needs of the local residents, business and visitors as well as helping reduce congestion and improving the environment. We have asked you what you think of the proposals and what styles of street furniture you would like, and the results of that consultation will be published here soon.

Our proposals

  • Narrowing of Bristol Road from the existing 4 lanes to 2 lanes
  • High quality widened footway with new paving, lighting and street furniture
  • New on-street parking bays and improved off-street parking
  • New pedestrian crossing points, trees and soft-landscaping
  • Replacing the old guardrails, benches and bollards with the new modern and high quality street furniture
  • Up-grading all bus stops to showcase standard, and
  • Create a new attractive public open space at Tay's corner.

Benefits of the scheme

  • Narrowing Bristol Road would reduce the volume of traffic on the high street and improve pedestrian access. This will also help in reducing traffic accidents, noise and air pollution
  • Widening of footways, new lighting, trees and soft landscaping would provide a quality shopping and leisure environment
  • Quality bus stops would improve accessibility and encourage more people to visit the high street
  • Creation of new public spaces would improve the image of the area and attract new ctivities such as exhibitions, entertainment events and market stalls etc.

We are intending to start the work in late 2007 and complete it in 2008.
