Baby Lemur with mother
Baby Lemur, the latest arrival at the Nature Centre
Nature Centre News

Surprise birth of baby lemur at Birmingham Nature Centre!

A surprise baby ring tailed lemur was born in the early hours of Friday 3 April at Birmingham Nature Centre.

Proud parents Kibbey and Linta arrived at the centre on the 11th of March from Bristol Zoo, with staff having high hopes for them breeding in the approaching months.

Then, unbeknown to the staff of the Nature Centre (and indeed Bristol Zoo) the female lemur Linta gave birth to the as yet unamed furry arrival who has been clinging on to her stomach from its first moments.

The staff at the Nature Centre have contacted the team at Bristol Zoo who are thrilled at the news. This will be an added attraction for those visiting the centre over Easter and in the next few weeks, along with the two new baby Soay sheep lambs.

About the Nature Centre

Located on Pershore Road, two miles south of Birmingham City Centre, the Birmingham Nature Centre homes a wide range of animals, both European and from across the world. These animals include many charismatic and exciting species like Meerkats, Lemurs and Otters. The centre has a wide collection of endangered reptiles, and it plays an important role in international breeding programmes for them. Find out more about the Centre's animals

The Nature Centre is gradually changing its focus from a collection of various animals to housing endangered species and focusing on animal conservation and captive breeding programmes. This will give people a chance to see an increasing amount of rare and exotic species in Birmingham. The Centre will continue to develop further by improving the quality of the enclosures, and enriching the living environment for the animals.

Whether you are interested in animal conservation or just having a fun day out with the family, the Birmingham Nature Centre offers something for everyone. Come and see the exciting and fun animals. We're nearer than you think!

lizardEducation

The Birmingham Nature Centre views the opportunity to see living animals at close quarters in naturalistic enclosures as an excellent tool for increasing public awareness about species conservation and biodiversity. The Nature Centre emphasises on the importance of education through pro-active educational and interpretative techniques. It wishes to raise awareness of endangered species, sustainability, biodiversity and environmental issues.

Schools
The Birmingham Nature Centre provides an ideal opportunity for schools to study many different subjects including science, literacy, numeracy, geography and art. The Centre offers great surroundings for environmental projects. Find out more information on school visits.
