It is important that you read ALL of the information on this page before you book a collection.

You must specify all items to be collected when you make your collection request. We will NOT collect any items left out for collection that are not listed on the collection crew's worksheet.

Please leave all items at the front of your property as close to the road as possible, in an easily accessible and visible place. Do not leave items on the footpath or on a public highway. The collection crew must be able to access the property and remove items safely. Please note that if items have not been presented correctly, or are too dangerous to handle (no sharp edges, points etc), or are unsafe to transport, then they will not be collected.

We will not collect the following items:

  • Broken glass panes (unless securely boxed or wrapped and clearly marked)
  • Sheds
  • Boilers
  • Trees
  • Gas canisters
  • Soil
  • Rubble and building waste
  • Asbestos
  • Green garden waste (unless you are not on the garden waste collection service).

We collect most things in a compaction vehicle, so items like bricks and gas bottles would create problems. Large items such as trees and sheds cant be handled easily by the two-man crew. But you can take these materials to your Household Recycling Centre for disposal.


To ensure fair and equal access for all Birmingham households to this very popular service, the City Council has found it necessary to introduce a collection charge for frequent users who require more than 3 large household collections (of up to 6 items per collection) in a calendar year. If you do not want to pay for a collection, you can still take items you want to dispose of to a Household Recycling Centre or arrange for registered waste carriers to take them away.

Reuse

For all collections, we would encourage all households to consider whether there is a better use for your unwanted goods other than sending them to landfill. They could be used by someone else, or could be recycled or repaired. For more details see the external links below.

These changes are being introduced to ensure fair and equal access for all our residents and remains free for up to 3 collections. Many other Local Authorities make a charge for every collection.

Our refuse collectors can’t take large items along with your normal, non-recyclable household rubbish.

Most Large Item Collections are on a Saturday, except for fridges, freezers and washing machines which we normally collect on weekdays.

Collection

We will advise you of the date we will be collecting your items once your request is accepted.

  • Collections will normally happen between 6am and noon.
  • Please leave all items out by 6am on the day of collection.The earliest you can put your items out is the night before – please don’t leave things out any earlier than this.

Special Assistance for the elderly and infirm or disabled

An assisted service is available for people who are elderly and infirm or those with a physical disability. We cannot enter your property but can arrange to pick items up from immediately outside the property e.g. front door or side door if accessible. Each request will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

We will telephone you after you have made your booking and if we can assist, we will confirm when we’re able to collect.

  • As well as the Large Item Collection service, there are other ways of disposing of your unwanted bulky household items such as:


  • If you would like to make a request for a refund, please use our service specific enquiry form. All requests are dealt with on an individual basis, and will be investigated by one of our officers. We may have to contact you to ask for further information about your request before a decision is made.

  • The switchover to digital TV for households in Birmingham will take place in September 2011.

    From this date people using televisions that still use the old analogue signal will have to buy a new digital TV, or upgrade their existing set to receive digital signals, through a digital set-top box, satellite, or cable.

    For residents considering buying a new television there are a number of options available to for its safe disposal:


    “Not far off 100 per cent of a typical television can be recycled – which is very positive. However, if people can reuse their old TVs instead of throwing them away, that would be even better.”

    All TVs and monitors taken to the HRCs are sent to Darlaston for recycling. The hazardous materials are safely removed and recycled and then the monitors are stripped for components. The monitors are then shattered to allow raw materials like plastic, glass and metal to be recycled.

    • Fridges and freezers contain CFC gases which destroy the ozone layer when released in to the atmosphere. We incinerate most bulky waste but we take fridges and freezers to a separate facility, where the CFCs are removed before the metal is recycled.

    • Having a limit lets us maximise the number of collections we can make in one day. Before we had a limit, some residents would do house clearances and leave everything out for the council to collect, which often tied up a crew on one property all day. A limit of six items makes the service fairer, more efficient and more cost-effective.

    • You can arrange for multiple collections of six items until everything has gone. The first 3 collections of 6 items or less will be delivered free of charge, any further collections will be chargeable as detailed in the overview.
    • Front collections are usually easier and therefore more efficient. It avoids problems such as locked gates or garages and no-one home to let in the collection crew, which would be a wasted journey and an inefficient way of working. By leaving items at the front, you don’t need to be at home when the collection crew calls.
