Birmingham City Council

Jobs - Equal Opportunities

Birmingham City Council is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity in employment for everybody. We take action to avoid discrimination and take positive steps to redress the imbalance in the workforce profile. Job applicants are considered only on their ability to do the job for which they are applying. However, applicants should note that there are some job vacancies advertised on our website where our Equal Opportunity Policy does not apply (i.e. some vacancies in schools and adverts for other organisations vacant jobs).

THE COUNCIL'S EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES IN EMPLOYMENT POLICY STATEMENT:

Birmingham City Council will ensure that all existing and potential employees receive equal consideration and is committed to the elimination of unlawful or unfair discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, disability, colour, ethnic or national origin, nationality, sexuality, gender identity, marital status, responsibility for dependants, religion, trade union activity and age.

It's the intention of the City Council that its workforce, at all levels, should reflect the composition of the City's population.

To achieve this, the Council will take active and positive steps to eliminate discrimination, reduce the effects of past discrimination and to promote equality in employment.

The Council seeks to provide a positive role model for other organisations in the community. To achieve these aims the Council will continue to:

  • Ensure that its employment practices provide equality of opportunity for both current and prospective employees and promote a work culture that values diversity.
  • Use the Race Relations Act 1976, the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and any other appropriate legislation, as a framework for action to support initiatives.
  • Will work in partnership with community groups and other agencies to remove any barriers to fair and equal treatment.

JOB APPLICANTS

All applicants will be treated equally and fairly throughout the recruitment and selection process and we will make every effort to ensure you are dealt with by the following standards.

We will try to take account of any particular needs you advise us of in relation to the recruitment and selection process, such as providing information in Braille or on tape, and ensuring a suitable interview venue.

All decisions will be made in line with the Council's Equal Opportunities in Employment Policy and Recruitment and Selection Policy, and will be made on merit - in line with the job and skills requirements set for the vacancy.

POSITIVE ACTION

The Council will undertake, through positive action, as set out in legislation, to address the issues of under representation.

TWO TICKS DISABILITY SYMBOL

Some years ago, the authority signed up to the 'Two Ticks Disability Symbol' which is operated by the Employment Service. The award of the symbol means that the Council has agreed to take action in relation to our commitments of good practice, in relation to the employment of people with disabilities. These are:

  • To interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy - and consider them on their abilities.
  • To ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at any time - but at least once a year - with disabled employees what we and they can do to make sure they can develop and use their abilities.
  • To make every effort when employees become disabled, to ensure they stay in employment.
  • To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make the commitments work.
  • Each year, we will review the five commitments, assess what has been achieved and plan ways to improve. Then we will let employees and the Employment Service know about
  • Progress and future plans.
