New guidelines for the design and location of tall buildings
Few new tall buildings have been proposed in Birmingham since the 1970s.
However, a significant increase in investment over the last ten years is
transforming the city centre. Now that this is coupled with Government
guidance stipulating higher densities, market interest in the
development of tall buildings has revived.
Tall buildings would
have a significant role to play in sustaining and enhancing Birmingham’s
renaissance, therefore the Council will welcome and encourage
well-placed high quality tall buildings that would be an asset to the
city and would help to create a distinctive city centre skyline.
‘High Places’, the new design guidance, provides a planning policy
framework for tall buildings that will ensure proposals are well placed,
well designed and of high quality so that they would enhance the image
of the city.
