Finding information

Our site contains a lot of information and it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start. We have tried to organise the information on our site so that you can find what you want as quickly and as easily as possible.

There are several ways to find the information you are interested in:

Menus: If you are using the site with images displayed, use the menus at the top and left-hand side of each page to look for information by topic. If you are using the Text Only version of the site, all menus will appear at the top of the page. (See Sections of the Site)

Quick links: There are a number of useful links at the top of each page which link directly to key areas of the website, including the home page, our what's new listings, and our jobs section.

A to Z: The A to Z is a comprehensive list of topics and services provided by the council, in alphabetical order. Look under "R" for Recycling, for instance.

Search: The search facility will search the whole site for you using the keywords you type into the search box, which can be found at the top left of each page. If you wish to narrow down your search, by category for instance, use our Advanced Search option.

If you have any difficulty finding the information you require please get in touch and we will do our best to help.

Sections of the site:

You can navigate through the site using the links on the main menu bar of each page to move between sections. All the links within each section are listed on either the left-hand side of the page if you are using the site with images displayed, or at the top of the page, below the main menu, if you are using the Text Only version of the site. You can get back to the home page by using the "Home" link above the main menu bar on each page.

The main sections of the site are:

Business and Economy - Information for businesses in the city, including economic development, regeneration, business regulations and other useful services.

Community - Information for the community, including local council services, organisations, and information for young people.

Environment - Pages about the natural and built environment, including planning, parks, waste disposal and public health.

Health - Information about local health services and resources.

Learning - Pages about education in the city, including schools, training for employment, and adult learning.

Leisure and Tourism - Information about events, leisure facilities and activities, including sport, museums and library services.

Your Council - Information about council structure, procedure and policies. Includes information about MPs and councillors, our online services, and jobs available with the Council.

New pages:

New and updated pages are listed on our What’s New page. There is a link to What's New at the top right of each page.

We endeavour to make sure that the information on our site is kept up-to-date. If you scroll to the bottom of each page you can see when the page was last updated.

Accessibility:

You may view Birmingham.gov.uk with or without graphics and in different font sizes.

If you wish to view the site without graphics, use the Text Only link in the top left-hand corner of each page. Use the Graphics View link to display images once again.

If you wish to alter the font size, go into the Text Only view, and (if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer) from the menu at the top of your screen select View, then Text Size, and choose the size at which you would like to display the text. If you are using another type of browser the procedure may be slightly different - please use your browser's Help button for information.

We are undertaking a comprehensive review of our web site. As part of this process, we are looking at accessibility standards; we intend that our future system will meet W3C WAI-AA standards as a minimum. If you have any comments, please contact webteam@birmingham.gov.uk or use the form below.

Bookmarking pages:

You can 'bookmark' a page so that you can easily find it again at another time.

To do this in Microsoft Internet Explorer select Favourites from the menu bar at the top of your screen, then Add to Favourites.

To do this in Netscape select Bookmarks then Add Bookmarks.

Other browsers may require a slightly different procedure - use the browser's Help button to find out more.
