The world’s largest authentic German Christmas market to be staged outside of Germany or Austria returned to Birmingham in 2008, with more than 90 stalls bringing a truly festive experience to the city centre.

In its eighth year the Frankfurt Christmas Market, supported by Heart FM, was the centrepiece of the city’s annual Christmas events calendar. It attracted 2.8 million visits to the city during its six-week run.

Venue: Victoria Square and Upper New Street
Date: Mid November to 23 December
Time: 10am-9pm daily

Traditional stalls offered the usual array of traditional handmade toys, Christmas decorations, beautiful jewellery and craft goods as well as a helter skelter and carousel to keep younger visitors entertained. Visitors were able to enjoy the delights of German mulled wine (Glühwein), grilled sausages, vegetarian options, pretzels, German beer, and for those with a sweet tooth, gingerbread, crepes and marzipan sweets.

At the heart of the market in Victoria Square each year is a traditional bandstand where musicians perform every lunchtime and evening. Groups of local carol singers and school children also stage special performances throughout the festive period.

In 2008, the Frankfurt Market was joined by Birmingham’s Christmas Craft Fair, which was double the size of 2007 with over 50 stalls filling Chamberlain Square and the Centenary Way bridge. It offered an entirely different collection of stalls with local traders selling handcrafted items created locally and imported from all over the world.

Family Days at the Market

Family Days are a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the market. With a Secret Santa Hunt with prizes to be won, and extra activities and fun games for kids of all ages to keep everyone entertained.
