Environmental Health - What we do?

This page is known as: http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/environmental-health

Our Customer Charter details our commitments to you as our Customers
Environmental Health is about making Birmingham a safe and pleasant city in which to live, work and visit and the Environmental Health Section of the City Council carries out work at a local level to promote and protect public health.

Priority areas of work are set by various Council committees including the Public Protection Committee, which is one of the City Council’s Regulatory Committees.

We aim is to take firm but fair regulatory action to protect public health, the environment and to promote the well being of all Birmingham’s citizens. Besides enforcing standards relating to food, health and safety and environmental protection in local shops, businesses and communities, we respond to more than 55,000 requests for assistance each year, direct from members of the public, traders, other City Councils and Government agencies.

CLEAN
We carry out investigations and enforcement to tackle neighbourhood problems such as: littering, flytipping, flyposting/placarding, dog-fouling, pollution, pest control and drainage blockages.

SAFE
We carry out inspections to make sure that businesses know how to comply with the law and to check that they do. We are legally responsible for enforcing a very wide range of legislation including:

food hygiene and safety including food poisoning and infectious diseases
heath and safety at work
environmental protection and authorised industrial processes
nuisances such as noise, illegal littering and rubbish dumping, illegal advertising, flyposting and placarding
animal welfare.
