This page is known as: www.birmingham.gov.uk/chaperones-training

The Children (Performances and Activities) (England) Regulations 2014 states whilst a child is taking part in a performance they must be in the care of a Chaperone, that has been approved by the Licensing Authority. The role of the chaperone is to act in "loco parentis" to the child or children in their care and to exercise a duty of care which any parent/guardian might be reasonably expected to give that child.

The local authority has a statutory duty to protect children and young person who are engaged in the performance industry. We work to ensure that children have an enjoyable experience and that neither their health nor education suffers as a result of their performance. Chaperone are therefore appointed to act on behalf of the Local Authority to safeguard the welfare of children and young people.

Chaperones are registered and approved for a maximum of 3 years, after which they will need to re-register.

Training is a requirement to in order to complete the registration. All newly appointed Chaperones will be required to complete 1½ Days Training, which will encompass Roles & Responsibilities as outlined in the Legislation and Child Protection. Thereafter the Chaperones will need to attend a Child Protection Refresher course every 3 years.

To ensure Chaperone have an understanding of the legislation to carry their role effectively Birmingham City Council in partnership with Solihull, Warwickshire and Sandwell Council’s delivers training throughout the year.

In order to offer a choice of dates and locations a mixture of daytime or evening sessions are available.
