Employment Legal Team
Kate Charlton is Head of Employment Law and qualified as a solicitor in 1995.
Kate has specialised in employment law and employee relations since 1983. Kate has over 10 years experience working as a senior Human Resources manager in both the public and private sector, specialising in employee relations. Prior to joining the council in 2008, she practised as an employment lawyer in private practice. Kate now deals with all aspects of employee relation matters working closely with HR colleagues, by way of example on collective consultation obligations, redundancy and termination of employment issues, TUPE, policies and procedures, including representing respondents in Tribunals, and conducting seminars on employee matters. She is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
- helps shape development of policy and improve HR and safety practices and procedures working closely with clients in joint project group initiatives
- has established dedicated units with specific expertise - Employment Tribunal, Employment Governance, Pay & Grading and Single Status - to deal with the various aspects of cutting edge work, including collective consultation, redundancy, restructures and group litigation concerning the implementation of Pay and Grading and Single Status Equal Pay litigation, pensions and car users claims etc.
- defends claims in the Employment Tribunal, County and High Courts, Appellate Courts and Tribunals largely brought by employees (Council and Schools managed)
- provides advice on policy or specific employment queries as well as providing training to clients
