Road Safety Officer carrying out in-car seat checks

Families in Birmingham can have their child car seat checked for FREE by Birmingham City Council's Road Safety Education Team as part of a drive to improve in-car safety for children.

New seatbelt laws came into effect in 2006 making it compulsory for children under 135cm in height or under the age of 12 (whichever they reach first) to use child car seats or booster seats.

The Council's Road Safety Education Team works in partnership with WM Police and WM Fire Service in delivering child car seat checking clinics around the City and we would urge parents to take advantage of the FREE clinics.

Did you know.......More than half of seats checked by the Road Safety Education Team required some adjustments to ensure they were correctly fitted and 8% of those assessed did not have any form of child car restraint.

During our seatbelt clinics we have come across so many excuses for not having a child car seat and we would like to share a few with you.

What's your excuse?

Top excuses for not using an appropriate child car restraint include:
  • I was only travelling a short distance ...
  • I thought my child was tall/old enough ...
  • I didn't realise it was the law ...
  • I forgot to buy one ...
  • My child undid the harness ...
  • I can hold my child on my lap ...
  • They're too expensive ...

THERE IS NO EXCUSE! the safest way for children to travel is in a child car seat suitable for their weight and size.
