Ward Information


At the time of the 2011 Census there were 40 electoral wards in Birmingham, with an average population size of 27,000.

  • At 34,000, Nechells and Bordesley Green wards have the highest number of residents. In contrast, Sheldon is the least populated with 21,800 people.
  • Lozells and East Handsworth and Washwood Heath are the most densely populated with 89 and 81 people per hectare respectively. In contrast Sutton Newhall has just 10 persons per hectare. However, even this is above the regional and national average of 4 people per hectare.
  • Household size is greatest in Bordelsey Green (3.7) and Washwood Heath (3.6). The city average is 2.6 people per household.
  • Wards in Sutton Coldfield rank 1 to 4 for the proportion of pensioners. Ladywood ranks bottom with 5%.
  • According to the 2011 Census, 90% of residents in Lozells and East Handsworth, Sparkbrook, Aston and Washwood Heath wards said that they were from an ethnic group other than white British.
  • Self employment rates were highest in Sutton Four Oaks (16.6%), Bordesley Green (15.3%) and Moseley & Kings Heath (15%)
