Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK and the economic centre of the West Midlands. The city has a significant role to play in "rebalancing the economy" away from the South-East.
The Birmingham Economy and Jobs Overview & Scrutiny Committee’s job is to look at the work of the City Council and its partners to ensure that all are working towards Birmingham as a thriving, sustainable economy.
Call for Evidence – High Speed 2: Maximising the Impact for Birmingham
High Speed 2 is one of the most significant projects to affect Birmingham in the coming years. The plan is to create a network of high speed train lines, initially to serve London to Birmingham (from around 2026), with further links to form a ‘Y’ shaped network running from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds from around 2032. It promises to bring jobs and prosperity to the region, as well as increased speed, capacity, and connectivity.
The project is therefore a critical element of ensuring Birmingham has a thriving and sustainable economy – a fundamental interest of the Birmingham Economy & Jobs O&S Committee.
It is also key to the Transport, Connectivity & Sustainability Overview & Scrutiny Committee’s remit to look at how well connected Birmingham is. The new line should be part of Birmingham’s safe and welcoming transport system, supported by sustainable transport planning that is capable of driving growth and responding to evolving mobility requirement.
The two committees have therefore joined together to undertake a joint review, to ask:
How can we ensure Birmingham gets maximum benefit from HS2?
