This section is designed specifically to help Link Governors with their important role on the Governing Body (GB).

So why have a Link Governor?

The Chair of Governors has a heavy load in running the GB as an organisation and the Link Governor role can help significantly. When the GB is running well it is best placed to fulfil its main role of helping the school to continuously improve.

The vital role of the Link Governor

The Link Governor plays a vital role in 'linking' the GB to appropriate training, development and support. There is satisfaction for this considerable responsibility in playing an active part in constantly improving the effectiveness of the GB strategic management of the school:

  • The GB must operate well as an organisation in its own right in order to help the school to continuously improve the service it gives to the community it serves, which is its primary purpose:

    • Everyone brings different experiences and skills, and it is important that these are employed to best advantage to the school and its learners.

    • Development of skills and staying abreast of current issues are paramount if governors are to fulfil their role as strategic managers.

  • Link Governors can act only with the full support of the Chair and Headteacher. They will have to:

    • establish regular communication with all governors;

    • make judgements about the appropriateness of training;

    • liaise closely with the Chair, Headteacher and Clerk;

    • manage their own time effectively!

There are certain core tasks that define the role of Link Governor, working with colleague governors and primarily the Chair in:

  • assisting with succession planning for all GB roles;

  • assessing the training needs of the GB and individual governors and proposing a training plan;

  • managing and helping with the induction of new governors;

  • monitoring developments in governor training and other matters of schools' governance and arranging appropriate training, development or briefing;

  • managing the training from booking to feedback.
