Fixed Period Exclusion

Number of Days
(or total in one term)
Stages of Process
Lunchtime NB: Lunchtime exclusion is a fixed period exclusion (equivalent to one half school day).

  • Rights of representation and expectations for Governors to meet will be the same as those stated below. Obviously, the category (below) into which they will fall, will be dependent upon the number of days the lunchtime exclusion adds up to.
1 to 5
  • No obligation for Governors to meet, unless the parents choose to make representations.
  • There is no guidance given regarding restriction for when they should meet.
  • Work is to be set and marked by the excluding school.
  • No power of reinstatement.

6 to 15

  • No obligation for Governors to meet, unless the parents choose to make representations.
  • If required, the Governors should meet between the 6th and 50th school day after the date the Governors were informed of the exclusion by the headteacher.
  • Full Time education must be arranged by the excluding School from the 6th day of any Fixed Period Exclusion.
  • Governors' Disciplinary Committee (GDC) has power of reinstatement.
16 and over and permanent exclusions
  • Governors should meet between the 6th and 15th school day after the date the Governors were informed of the exclusion by the headteacher.
  • GDC has power of reinstatement.
Where a public examination will be missed
  • Governors should try to meet before the date of the examination. If, exceptionally, the chair of Governors does not consider it practical for the Governors to meet before the time when the pupil is due to take the public examination, s/he alone may consider the exclusion and decide whether or not to reinstate the pupil (these are the only circumstances in which a chair can sit alone to review an exclusion).
  • GDC has power of reinstatement.
