Schools

All the activities we provide can be tailored and adapted to your schools needs. Where appropriate we aim to link our activities with the key stage outcomes. With habitat studies, trees and the environment and pond dipping activities, it is possible to generate data for use back in the classroom. Activities are based on half days. For a full day we usually combine a morning "academic" session with environmental games in the afternoon. In addition to the activities that we run, we can also help and advise on improving school grounds for environmental education. There is also an orienteering course available at Pype Hayes Park nearby. If there is an activity with an environmental theme, which you would like to try and it is not listed above, please call us to discuss your requirements as we may be able to help.

What to expect from the activities:

Habitat Studies

With habitat studies, we look at three different habitats and the insects within them. The three habitats examined are woodland, grassland and water. The insects found in these habitats are good illustrators of animal adaptations to suit a particular habitat. We will normally split a class into smaller groups, as it provides a better opportunity to get a closer look at the insects.

Citizenship Skills

At Plantsbrook we can provide a range of practical conservation activities which help to build citizenship skills. Places can also be provided for students on the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Tress and Our Environment

With trees and our environment the themes of age, use and importance of trees, seasonal changes and the lifecycle of trees are explored. There are also a number of fun activities which can be incorporated into this topic, for example tree dressing.

Animals and Their Adaptations

This is a classroom-based activity in which we look at animals and how they have adapted to the environment and their role within it. Old museum exhibits (stuffed animals) are used in this activity as it allows students to get a closer look at these adaptations.

History and Land Use

History and land use looks at the changing landscape and what signs of past practices are still visible. This is done by using old ordinance survey maps.

Earth Walks

Earth walks combine a number of fun activities which allow students to get a closer view of nature and wildlife.
There are a number of craft projects which fit into the category of 'Craft Design Technology', from bird boxes to insect houses. These projects can also be used to improve school grounds for wildlife.

Environmental Games

Environmental games are a fun way of explaining difficult environmental issues through play.
