Budget 2008/09

The City Council approved the 2008/09 budget at its meeting on 26 February 2008. The council tax increase for 2008/09 for City Council services is 1.9%. The overall level of council tax for Birmingham, when the increases for the separate fire and police authorities are added, is 2.06%.

Budget headlines are:

  • £11 million to help people with learning disabilities and vulnerable older people;
  • £5 million as part of a programme of targeted and preventative services for Looked After Children;
  • 15 year programme to rebuild or refurbish all of Birmingham's secondary schools;
  • £431 million spending on housing in Birmingham over the next three years;
  • £7 million extra for doorstep recycling, highways maintenance and the loss of car park income;
  • £2 million more for constituencies to work with local groups to deliver services for local needs;
  • additional funding to support events promoting the city and the digital birmingham project;
  • the business transformation programme will save £565 million over ten years;
