HIV Team - Information for people from abroad

There are many support groups and resources available in Birmingham for people from abroad who are living with HIV / AIDS. Details of these services are outlined below.


African Community Council for the Regions

Based at the Freshwinds Centre.

Contact Dr Deng or Joseph Nibizi for information on the Community Care Team. They offer information, support and outreach work to African people attending clinics, colleges and universities on general and specific health care issues.

Birmingham Asylum Seekers Health Outreach Team

The Health Outreach Team works with Asylum Seekers on personal health issues, accessing GPs and specialist health clinics and enabling access to information and support in the community.

The Kushinga Project

A new support group for African carers in Birmingham, organised by African Community Council for the Regions (ACCR). For details on group support / one-to-one support please contact Daisy Sawanhu-Malere on 0121 551 5334.


Refugee Integration Project

A service for refugees citywide. This centre offers an inter agency advice service by appointment only.

Agencies represented are: Midland Refugee Council, Connexions and Neighbourhood Advice

Benefits and Health Advice sessions from the BASHOT team.

Spoken languages available include Arabic, Kurdish, Dari or Farsi, Pushtu and Somali.

Terrence Higgins Trust

African services: Health promotion for African communities. Support services for African people living with HIV, newly diagnosed, enabling access to information, social and emotional support via face to face contact and a support group. Outreach work with voluntary, statutory and business agencies in Birmingham.
