Doorstep Sales and Rogue Traders

We advise you to never deal with people who knock on your door or call you on your telephone offering goods and services.
This page tells you about how you can protect yourself against unwanted rogue traders that may try to pressure you into buying products or signing contracts at your door.

Beware of builders who call at your house

Rogue Traders can operate by knocking on your door and asking or telling you that you need work done on your property. They normally seem cheap to start with, but once they have started they can charge you for more and more work that they discover needs to be done.

Their work is normally fr a poor standard, and may not have been needed at all. They overcharge for everything they do and give little or no paperwork. This can make them very hard to get hold of should any problems with their work arise.

Please be wary when dealing with people at the door.

Your Right to Cancel

Any trader who calls at your home, and who you then employ to do a job, has to give you details of your right to cancel in writing. When you enter into a contract at your home you are entitled to a 14 day cooling off period.

The trader still has to provide details of your right to cancel in writing even if you employ someone as a result of receiving a leaflet through your door.

Doorstoppers Campaign

The purpose of Doorstoppers is to highlight and help combat the problem of doorstep sellers who prey on vulnerable consumers by raising awareness of the problem and providing practical help and information on the many ways in which consumers can protect themselves from rogue traders on the doorstep. Doorstoppers improves the level of Community Safety and so reduces the fear that these traders can cause.

We work with other agencies and provide a rapid response service, which means we can respond immediately in cases where older or more vulnerable people have these tradesmen at the door and are being pressured into having work done. If we are informed we can even make arrangements to be there if such workmen are coming back later.

If you are having problems with rogue property repairers or you have a neighbour or friend who is the target of these "traders" please contact our rogue trader hotline on 0121 303 9367. You can also request doorstop stickers from us as and a 'Think Twice' Booklet.

Guidance for Consumer Contracts Regulations

Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 have revoked the Cancellation of Contracts made in a Consumers Home or Place of Work etc Regulations 2008. The new Regulations control the law relating to traders who enter into contracts away from their business premise or in a consumer's home. These are known as 'off premise' contracts and apply to contracts over £42. They state the consumer is entitled to a 14 day cooling off period, and the trader must provide this in a durable medium.
