Walking Bus Scheme

The Walking Bus concept is a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly approach to walking large groups of children to and from school whilst alleviating school run traffic congestion. A Walking Bus is a joint project for parents and schools. Parents and carers form a rota to take turns walking their children to school. The Road Safety Education Team can assist by checking the route for safety and training parent volunteers.

The Road Safety Education Team has successfully been running Walking Buses in Birmingham since 1998 and to assist schools has developed a Walking Bus pack. The pack consists of all the relevant documentation needed to set-up a Walking Bus. All paperwork in the pack can be photocopied.

The benefits of setting up a Walking Bus are:

  • Fun
  • Healthy option
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Promotes and improves road safety
  • Saves time
  • Avoids school gate parking and congestion
