Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA)

The City Council takes seriously its statutory responsibilities and will, at all times, act in accordance with the law and take necessary and proportionate action with regard to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 ('RIPA'). This Corporate Policy & Procedures Document is based upon the requirements of Act and Home Office Code of Practices on Covert Surveillance and Covert Human Intelligence Sources.

The City Council is most grateful to (the late) Lord Colville of Culross, Assistant Surveillance Commissioner of the Office of Surveillance Commissioners, for conducting an audit of the City Council's policies and procedures on 9 March 2010 and his most instructive and helpful contributions to the development of this Corporate Policy & Procedures Document.

Following the latest review of the Council's policies and procedures, the Rt Honourable Sir Christopher Rose wrote "You make considerable use of your directed surveillance powers and I am pleased to see that, generally, you do so in a compliant way, responsively to recommendations made following OSC inspections. I congratulate those involved."

If any local authority adopts or adapts this Corporate Policy and Procedures Document for its purposes, please acknowledge Birmingham City Council's work in this area.
