New Street Station Compulsory Purchase Order
New Street Station is one of the biggest and busiest railway stations in the United Kingdom, and the hub of the local and national rail networks.
Regenerating New Street Station
The proposed regeneration of New Street Railway Station, the Gateway Project, has local, regional and national support. To progress the regeneration of the station, the city council has made a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to acquire the necessary land and interests to take forward this key development.
Since the re-built station opened in 1967, passenger usage of New Street Railway Station has increased significantly, particularly since 2000 with overcrowding and closures on safety grounds becoming more frequent. Not only is the station deficient in terms of its operation for passengers, it also detracts from the quality of the surrounding urban environment and the image and perception of the city.
The Birmingham Gateway Project
The project partners (Birmingham City Council, Network Rail, Centro and Advantage West Midlands) have established the Birmingham Gateway Project, not only to address the immediate and long term issues of the station (including the provision of facilities required by the Disability Discrimination Act (1995)) and safety concerns resulting from the levels of overcrowding, but also wider implications for the economy and prosperity of the city and the region, as well as the national rail network.
The Gateway scheme enables the station to continue operating throughout the redevelopment, which means that the impact on both rail services and the functions and facilities of the city centre will be minimised. Furthermore the Birmingham Gateway Project Team will work to minimise the disruption and disturbance to all parties affected by the delivery and implementation of the proposals.

Improving access
The proposals, which were granted outline planning permission on 4 July 2007, comprise three main built elements:

the station building itself
-
the reconfiguration of the Pallasades Shopping Centre, and
-
two proposed tall buildings on Station Street.
The proposals for the station incorporate an expanded concourse and passenger waiting areas, improved access onto the station platforms, and an atrium which will introduce natural light into the station concourse.
To the south of the station a new pedestrian entrance and two tall towers (the Southside towers) will be created. This will be facilitated by the acquisition of Stephenson Tower and other interests.
