Development Updates

Birmingham's continued transformation results in a number of key development projects across the city, many within the city centre.

We aim to give you planning information about some of the major schemes. Many of these result from major redevelopment and regeneration proposals promoted by Planning Policies.

We produce an annual Development Summary, and there are some specific site pages below. Links to the developers' websites are included where available to provide the latest information about the schemes.

Arena Central - The redevelopment of the former Central TV studios opposite Centenary Square has started. The development includes private residential apartments, office space, leisure, hotel and entertainment facilities alongside a new public square.

The 9.2 acre (3.7ha) site is being promoted as an exciting office and leisure space. The scheme has already attracted investment from HSBC UK who plans to move their headquarters into the first new office building set for completion in 2017/2018, and Holiday Inn who have started work on building a 250-bed hotel, which is set to be completed in 2017.

Birmingham City University - Birmingham City University is continuing to develop its city centre campus. The first phase of development for the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design opened in 2012 with the second main Curzon building opening in September 2015. A third building is planned for 2016/2017 construction.

Eastside Locks - The development of the historic Eastside Locks which will provide a mixture of different uses including a 185 bed hotel, office space, residential and student accommodation for BCU students and retail space.
