Population Projections

Recent population projections forecast significant growth in Birmingham’s population. The 2012-based projections forecast growth of 12.2% (150,000) between 2012 and 2032. This was below the national average of 13.5%.

Population by broad age group: percentage change in Birmingham and England 2012-2032

Population by Broad Age

The 2012 projections show that the number of older people in Birmingham will increase rapidly. The chart above shows that estimates for over 65’s in Birmingham will increase to 193,700 between 2012 and 2032, an increase of 37.4%. However this is modest compared to the expected growth of 57% in England. The expected rate of growth for children in England (23.8%) is more than twice that for Birmingham (10.1%).

We are waiting for the publication of household growth based on the latest household population estimates from the Department for Communities and Local Government. The current household projections are 2008-based.
