Shopfronts Design Guide - Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG)

Approved Planning Policies Banner

The Shopfronts Design Guide was prepared to help maintain the traditional character and diversity of Birmingham's City Centre and suburban shopping areas, and to distinguish them from out of town shopping centres. These guidelines set out the principles of good shopfront design and encourage retailers to balance their own corporate image with investing in a quality built environment. Improving the shopping experience in the city centre and other local shopping areas will ultimately benefit all traders.

The Design Guide sets out criteria against which planning applications will be assessed. It includes advice about roller shutters, canopies and signs as well as the design of the shopfront itself.

The Design Guide was adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance in May 1995.
