Planning Application for New Library Received

The anticipated planning application for the new library building has been received by the Council (reference 2009/03897/PA). The proposed development consists of a 20,000sqm new library building, and alterations to, and refurbishment of, The REP theatre, including an extension to it. Part of the existing REP is proposed to be demolished to accommodate this. The proposals also include the creation of an amphitheatre within Centenary Square.

The 10 storey library building, with additional mezzanine floors above and below ground will be accessed via a shared entrance canopy with The REP.

The site of the proposed development is adjacent to the existing theatre fronting Centenary Square.

Extensive consultations are being carried out by the Council with residents, businesses and amenity societies. This initial consultation is open until 23rd September 2009. If significant amendments to the proposal are made during the course of the application, further consultation is likely.

The Council's Planning Committee is likely to determine the application later this year.
