This is to protect the public's health and safety and particularly applies to buildings which are derelict or damaged beyond economic repair, and have become unstable or dangerous either through accidental damage or neglect or proper maintenance.
If the building or structure poses a potential danger to the safety of people, we take the appropriate action to remove the danger. We have legal powers to require the owners of buildings or structures to remedy the defects or we direct our contractors to carry out works to make the building or structure safe.
In order to make an immediate response outside of normal working hours, an emergency team of experienced building surveyors are on call. They will inspect the building and help the owner of the building decide on the course of action required to protect the safety of the public. This may vary from closing a street to instructing the immediate demolition of the property, or helping the owner find a builder to make the property safe.
