This project supports the enhancement of reading and information skills of African Caribbean families in a library environment.
This Birmingham Libraries initiative promotes ways of increasing opportunities available to use library resources that meet the needs of African Caribbean families.
Meet Jennifer Startin
Jennifer is the Black Family Reading Project Development Worker for Ladywood/Perry Barr Homes and Neighbourhoods Directorate. As the BFRP development worker, one of my objectives is to engage with the African Caribbean community in the Ladywood and Perry Barr areas.

The libraries which are taking part in the project are Aston, Handsworth, Bloomsbury, Spring Hill/Ladywood, Birchfield and Tower Hill Libraries.
As part of the project there are a range of activities taking place at the libraries. These activities are free and include:-

Books for Children and Teenagers
Information for Parents
Talking Books
CD ROMs
Free Internet Access
In addition to events during Black History Month, there are ongoing events for parents and children throughout the year at the participating community libraries within the project.

Aston Library African Caribbean Adult Reading Group
Last Thursday of each month
Meeting : Aston Library, 99 Whitehead Road Aston B6 6EJ
Time: 5 – 6 pm Free session
Birchfield Library Adult Reading Group
2nd Monday each month
Meeting : Birchfield Library, 3 Trinity Road Aston, B6 6AH
Time: 10 – 11 am Free session
