1871 Bierman Birmingham in 1870/71

The map reproductions which you see on the web, including the examples on this page, are low resolution, because of the amount of time required for downloading. Prints of the maps are taken from the original high-resolution archival scan, so details are clearer.

This is the centre of a map showing some of Birmingham's public buildings, schools and businesses in 1870. The different colours show ward divisions.

1909 Bhamsuburb Birmingham and suburbs 1909

The print quality of the original of this map is excellent, perhaps because it was printed by the mapmaking firm of Bartholomews in Edinburgh.

This map includes some of the suburbs, as well as central Birmingham. Some of the areas shown, for example Handsworth and Moseley, would become part of Birmingham under the Greater Birmingham Scheme in 1911. Smethwick also appears. Although close, it has never formed part of Birmingham. Previously it was in Staffordshire, and is now in Sandwell.
